What I love most about Caius as a character is that, as the story progresses, you eventually get to a point where you legitimately empathize with his position.

When you look at other FF villains, that doesn’t really happen; you see individuals Hell bent on world domination / total destruction for primarily selfish means (save Seymour, but he had some serious logical flaws / borderline insanity driving his efforts).  With Caius, you have a man risking his life (and ultimately taking his own life, depending on the ending) and tempting fate for no reason other than to save an innocent person whom he loves.  Kefka, Kuja, Sephiroth, and Ultimecia essentially wanted to use their powers to become gods.  Caius strove to use his powers to save an innocent life from a fatal curse. 

He’s a selfless villain, and that is extremely enrapturing.
